RAM tough…check out the Renew America Movement

Ram tough.

If you haven’t explored the webpage of the Renew America Movement (RAM) please do at your first available opportunity. It is here:

https://renewamericamovement.com/

What’s RAM? It is a coalition of reasonable, rational Republicans who have set out to take their party back from Trump and his more deplorable minions. They regard the Orange Duce and his followers as genuine threats to democracy, and to the country. Hard to argue with them on that.

So, they are supporting moderate Republicans who have steered clear of the Trumpsters. Moreover, in those races where the GOP candidate is a Deplorable, and that person’s opponent is a Democrat, the RAM-people are supporting the Democrat.

The RAM-folks are thus a remarkable and praiseworthy case of valuing the nation over the party. Bravo and Brava to them.

If you’re interested, you can donate to RAM through through their page. Or, and this is very clever on their part, you can donate to individuals who the organization feels to be clear-headed and responsible (Democrats and Republicans alike) on a special page:

https://renewamericamovement.com/renewers/

RAM calls such people “Renewers,” and the page allows you to donate in an à la carte fashion. That is, you don’t have to donate to all of them. Just the ones you prefer.

By like token, if you’d vote against Trumpsters, RAM has a similar menu for them. It is at the bottom of the same page. Just scroll down.

To date, I have personally donated to Mark Kelly (though not from this page) and against Paul Gosar. More are coming.

What do I think of RAM’s chances of having a real effect? I guess that anyone who is doing anything, no matter how small, to stop Trump and Fascism in America is to be praised. And, by showing that there is a Republican and “Renewer” alternative to the Deplorables, RAM is doing very good things indeed.

But, can they ever take back their party?

This is just my guess, but I suspect that so long as Trump remains the dominant force in the GOP, and so long as people like Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor-Greene are in high position in government and are willing to do his bidding, then I fear RAM will not be able to make a dent in the current Republican Party. Sadly, the Deplorables and QAnoners are simply too entrenched. The Lunatic Fringe is now the Center, and cannot be nudged.

Which means, I suppose, that RAM is a party in waiting. Eventually, Trump will…shuffle off this mortal coil. And many of his followers will do the same. The GOP depends on Baby Boomers, who turn out at the polls on a regular and predictable basis, and in far greater numbers than do subsequent generations. But they are also growing older. Personally, I’m at the very tail end of the Boomer generations. And I’m 64. I’ll be 65 next year. The very, very youngest boomers, those born in 1964, are 57.

Which means, in time, Trump’s chief supporters will no longer be voting, or at least not in the numbers they used to. At that moment, then, perhaps RAM will be able to re-assert its leadership of the Party.

I hope so.

But, of course, that day is still a ways off. It may be that by that time, moderate Republicans will no longer exist, having long before been forced out of the GOP, and having therefore joined the Democratic Party.

Still, I wish RAM the very best.

In an age of madness, you have to admire those who select sanity.
