Climate Change Denialists…now they attack the solutions instead of the problem

 

Is what the world will have to look like before they take action?

Interesting article over on Grist’s webpage the other day. In “Climate change deniers are over attacking the science. Now they attack the solutions,” Kate Yoder writes that the same folks who used to say that climate change isn’t happening have finally starting admitting that the world really is getting warmer, and that it is probably the result of things like burning fossil fuels.* 

But, according to a new study, what they are doing instead is attacking the proposed solutions to the problem. Instead of saying that climate change is “junk science,” or standing in front of Congress with a snowball and claiming that nothing’s wrong with the weather (the way that Senator James Inhofe did in 2015), denialists are now saying that the problem isn’t that bad, and even if it is, well, the solutions would be worse than the disease. They would cost too much, or hurt “working people,” or endanger “the American way.”

Of course what’s going on here is that the evidence is now so overwhelming and so obvious, even to the most casual observer, that the apologists for Business As Usual can no longer pretend that there isn’t a problem. No they pretend instead that a there isn’t a solution. Which, of course, is so very much in the interest of fossil fuel companies and certain corporations which would otherwise be required to take action. 

The question, of course, is what would finally goad such organizations, and their apologists, into action. Perhaps when flood waters, or molten lava, finally inundate the boardroom? Or when the earth’s atmosphere has become, like that of Venus, a hellish brew of Carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid? 

Maybe then, when their own lives were genuinely at stake, they might actionably think about taking action. Or…or…maybe…

Even then, even as they expired gasping and wheezing on the floor, they will assure one another that, yes, Yes! This is the best of all possible worlds and all we really need to do is unshackle the markets, reduce taxes on trillionaires, and stop liberals and their “socialist agenda”…

And everything will be just ducky.
