What’s Coming, And What We Can Do About It

We need to act!

Okay, everyone,

So, a form of this same entry will run on both my personal blog and here. The reason for that is I think it is important for me to get out into the world in as many places as possible.

Here’s the thing: we are about to enter a very difficult time in our national history. Quite frankly, I think that the GOP is now pretty much beyond the pale. It is dominated by Trump, by billionaires, and by fanatics. Yes, there are some notable exceptions…for example, the Renew America Movement (RAM), which has set out to return the Republican Party to its right mind…but far too often the GOP seems to be the last refuge of conspiracy theories, insanity, racism, and hatred.

So, if you can, please find a way to fight the lunacy. Donate, if you can afford to do so, to Democratic and/or Never-Trumper Candidates. Volunteer with progressive organizations. And above all else, vote! This year is going to be critical, particularly as the GOP has more or less openly abandoned free elections to rely instead on gerrymandering, vote rigging, voter suppression, and every other corrupt measure ever adopted by a would-be dictatorship.

I think, in the long run, we will be fine. In ten to twenty years, a lot of the people who are voting for Fascists and near-Fascists will no longer be among us to vote. In a few years, many of the problems which are causing them to vote in such ways will also be solved, or at least no longer quite so troubling. (For example, in a generation or so, automation will have come and gone, and the need to find new jobs for people displaced by machines will have been met.)

But, in the short run, we’re facing what could be a genuinely existential crisis.

And it is up to us to deal with it.

So let’s get to it.

Onward and Upward,

~mjt
