There is a very disturbing article over on the Reuters news site that is worth a look. It seems that Trump supporters have been threatening election officials, claiming that Biden’s victory was “stolen” and that the officials will be executed by “patriots” sooner or later.*


That’s bad enough. What is really creepy is that the police aren’t exactly going out of their way to respond to the threats, or protect the election officials. 


Why the inaction? The reasons seem to be varied. In some cases, the police are overwhelmed and just don’t have the resources to track emails or phone calls from seemingly untraceable sources. In others, the authorities seem to believe that the threats come under protected, free speech. And, finally, most distressing of all, at least some police appear to support the people doing the harassing.


Personally, I regard it all with real alarm. We have few places in this secular world which are traditionally regarded as (in a way) sacred, and guaranteed a degree of peace. The polls are one of those places. For us, now, to allow that peace to be threatened by violent extremists, particularly Trump’s fanatics, is both dangerous and profoundly dishonorable.

Very powerful piece over on Vice that everyone should read, " Christian Nationalism Drove These People Out of Their Churches " by Tess Owen. In it, Owen looks at how Christian Nationalism...an ideology which is surely a contradiction in terms...has begun to overwhelm churches across the country. The idea that Jesus, who preached against such things, should be used to support racism, nationalism, and dictatorship is, of course, grotesque. Communists Sue Putin

  Say what?   The Communist Party of Russia …remember them? Used to be big in the totalitarian business…has sued Putin and his pals for rigging the recent elections in that country. They’ve even joined with the Putin’s various other critics in launching a legal campaign to get the elections overturned.(*) In a word, Whoa. The elections were, obviously, completely crooked. But there is something a bit stunning about the fact that the Russian Communists would actually find the spine (and the will) to say so.
