China under Xi is a monster...
If you haven’t seen it, check out “The AP Interview: Meng Hongwei’s wife slams ‘monster’ China,” by John Leicester, on the AP’s webpage.* Leichester recently spoke to Grace Meng, whose husband, Meng Hongwei, was a high ranking member of China’s police organization. He was, until recently, the president of the Paris-based international police organization, Interpol. However, in a very mysterious turn of events, Meng was recalled to Beijing in 2018, arrested, and apparently imprisoned, though no one is sure.
Grace Meng, his wife, and their children, remain in France under the protection of the French government. Ms. Meng has become an articulate and forceful critic of regime of President Xi, and says that she now sees his Neo-Maoist government as an abomination. China under the Communists, she says, is “a monster.”
You have to stand in admiration, if not awe, of Ms. Meng’s courage here. She is confronting a regime which has made it very clear that it will accept no criticism whatsoever. Indeed, my fear is that she is being so brave because she suspects she has nothing left to lose—by which I mean she knows she will not see her husband again. Let us hope that is not the case.
But one thing is clear. China’s government has demonstrated once again that it is not to be trusted, and is, indeed, a threat to its own people, not mention world peace. We can only hope that individuals like Grace Meng, those who confront Beijing with its hypocrisy and cruelty, will ever grow in numbers, and will, one day, have the satisfaction of seeing the corruption and cruelty of Xi and his government revealed to the world.
